Service pack installation fails for Crystal Reports 2016

I need to install the latest service pack for Crystal Reports 2016, but the installation fails with this error message "Failed to update setup engine executables. Program will exit"

How can I come around this?

Error message: Failed to update setup engine executables. Program will exit. shows up when SAP Crystal Reports 2020 SP1 installing.

In the install log files the error is:

Can't rename: C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\InstallData\setup.engine_temp to: C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\InstallData\setup.engine

Solution:

Run the setup.exe as Administrator. When the install Wizard prompts for you licence code, rename the folder from setup_engine.temp to setup_engine at C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\Install Data (Windows).

The installation continued successfully for me.

What is the current SP level of CR and what SP Level you are trying to apply?

Rename the "C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\setup.exe" to "setup.exe.old" and re-run the installer.
