why is that sport named after an insect?

Former Member

Thomas,

Cricket is NOT named after an insect.

Cricket may also refer to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket_%28disambiguation%29

Derivation of the name:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_cricket#Derivation_of_the_name_of_.22cricket.22

I think Thomas was reffering back to an earlier thread where someone made a joke about the insect and the sport and it flew (no pun intended) over some peoples heads.

I'm not a huge Cricket fan but i like the look of the Chennai Super Kings. How can a team with a player called Napoleon Einstein be bad?

Former Member

Hi,

I am the naugthy guy from Cricket non playing France who made fun about the pseudo relation between the insect and the game...

Though, it is obvious because the Cricket game is played on lawn which is grass and cricket insects love grass !

It was also to remind our world wide SDN audiance that, what is obvious in your country may be mysterious in the country of your fellow SDN forumer.

That is also something very interesting in the Coffee Corner : confronting opinions and different cultures.

Sorry to disturb (in fact, not really) , once more the Crickets fans !

PS : No game is superior to Petanque !

Greetings,

Hi friends,

did not know about Olivier's previous thread on the topic, just my usual sense of "humour".

I actually watched some cricket on TV during a vacation on an island in the Indian ocean and probably understood 7 percent of the rules after several days...

Feel free to run over my home football (soccer) team "Hertha BSC Berlin"

Yeah, run all over Hertha BSC, but speak no evil of Werder!!

I come from Hyderabad (and now live in Bremen, in case my previous comment aroused doubts) and like they say - you can take the boy out of Hyderabad, but you can't take Hyderabad out of the boy.

All hail the Deccan Chargers!

Hi,

What is this strange game ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A9tanque

The first World Championships were organized in 1959. The most recent championships were held in Faro (2000), Monaco (2001), Grenoble (2002, 2004 and 2006), Geneva (2003), Brussels (2005), and Pattaya / Thailand (2007). Fifty-two teams from 50 countries participated in 2007.

Yes, He is a new find in the game in this format. He performed well in the recently concluded Under - 19 world cup Cricket. He represents Chennai Super Kings as Stuart rightly pointed.

Bad luck is coming in different manifestations for Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad.

The other day it was Virender Sehwag's Blitzkrieg and yesterday it was sheer power hitting of Aussie spin magician, Shane warne with his unlikely batting prowess....

hope the Deccan chargers have something in the offing in the remaining matches atleast..

today is Mumbai Indians Vs Punjab Kings...interesting match, because both the teams haven't got started in the points table....

Hi Dudes,

Deccan chargers:Leader is the main problem for deccan chargers.Laxman is such a nice man..that he never like any team disspointed.

he is trying his level best for keeping other teams Happy..

First two mathces..The man who is not at all fit for one-days

(venu gopal) has been sent to opener..and then following the captian laxman as one-down..which is maxing the situation so pathetic.Afridi sending him at 6th oreder.in 20 game match what his palns only god knows.

ok first two mathces bad luck..but the third match..where thins seems fine..2 overs 21 to 1 over 18 runs..Really no team will loss the match generally..but the great brain fo laxman again comes into picute..he has given the ball to "MONKEY" who has been given 24 runs in his previous over(Includes 3 sixes form our test palyer Kaif + 6 runs)

.Monkey has bowled such anice the endresult every one knows..

but i dont understand one thing..iafridi who has given only 6 runs and taken 3 wickets previous over has been avoided and ball has given To monkey.....laxman hats up!!! cheers..the reason behind his paly is soon coming to picutres friends...wait and see...

[No one knows when or where cricket began but there is a body of evidence, much of it circumstantial, that strongly suggests the game was devised during Saxon or Norman times by children living in the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearings in south-east England that lies across Kent and Sussex.|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_cricket]

I have not heard the game Karra Billa, but I know [gilli danda|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilli-danda] looks like the raw form of cricket.

I think Andhra People can call this game in different words like gooti-billa and Karra billa etc. It is totally depends up on their Region like Telangana, Rayalaseema and Kostandhra.

If you are belongs to Andhra Pradesh, you can well known about these Regions.

And interestingly, the Oz media is fuming about the same things they have benefitted while at Sydney:

1. A grassed catch. (Clarke's catch then)

2. Not referring to third umpire (Symmonds stumping then), when it was necessary.

I cant stop laughing, esp when I think about statements made by some of the Oz players then:

The law of averages always catches up with ya.

haha... and what a time for the law of averages to catch-up with ya. The Ashes!!!!

Absolutely Agree.

Also, if you go back few more years , then you must be remembering Sachin's Head before Wicket (HBW ) on McGrathu2019s delivery?

Comon'n OZ thatu2019s Cricket, Itu2019s only one year ago. Every test might not be played in Sydney.

P.S. I appreciates Efforts from England despite the umpire decisions, and at the same time I do appreciate the efforts from Clarke and Haddin.

Was it a Head Before Wicket or a Shoulder Before Wicket. I think it was the latter.

Yeah u are right, England did not get it in a platter. Oz was truly off-color save for a couple of good batting performances and England bowlers were fiery.

Do all players playing only for Money? There is no affection with their nation in their heart? How they can forget the pains and glory which they brought to their nation by winning two consecutive maiden world cups? For the moment Were they remembered the prestige of Vivian Richards and Malcolm Marshal? Establishing the records is easier than keeping them. Donu2019t forget that was first ever home/overseas defeat for WI against B.

I think you shouldn't conclude this that anyone dislikes Pakistan or its team. Ultimately, it is just a game and should be taken accordingly. These players don't give anything to anyone when they lift a trophy

There's another video of Bangladeshi Cricket player's interview which was taken on Pak's TV channel (I'm not sure if that's real or some kinda parody, you may figure that out).

That's super funny. If you want to see it, I can give you the link

"This reminds me of the game played in 1958 at the same venue. West Indies were 614 for 5 declared. As young kids we bunked classes and were glued to the Radio sets. Kanhai got a big double, Sobers got a hundred, and as the name suggested Butcher clinically got a hundred. India were out for 124 in the 1st and 154 in the 2nd, lost by innings and 336 runs. What revenge, even if it took more than 50 years. Happy it happened in my life time."

Well got this as a E-mail forward, not sure if its true

What is confidence and dedication?

One incidence is quoted .

India vs Australia [2004] match...

Brad Hogg took Sachin's wicket.

At the end of the match Hogg gave that

Ball to Sachin for his autograph.

Sachin put his sign with one beautiful sentence,

"IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN."

Till today Hogg could not take his wicket for the second time.

THAT'S CONFIDENCE & DEDICATION.. !

HATS OFF TO OUR LITTLE MASTER SACHIN.

After this incident Brad Hogg and Sachin Tendulkar came face to face 21 times...but he could never get the Master Blaster out

Howzaaat!

Ohh great. So thats one more example which shows his greatness. But wonder why Sachin still couldn't be a good captain. His weakness in taking appropriate decision at the right time was clearly show in the IPL finals. For someone who is one of the greatest batsman of all time, someone who has played international cricket for more than 20 years, this inability to lead a team could be one small black mark in his glorious career when he retires.

Hi Vikranth

To my mind not really a black mark, as the skills rquired for captaincy can sometimes be the opposite of those needed to be a great batsman. For example, Brian Lara was a great batsman, but I wouldn't want him as captain. And Ian Chappel wasn't the best batsman of his time, but was a great captain.

That Sanchin is one of the best batsmen the world has seen is without question. In 100 years anyone looking at his figures will not feel the legend is diminished just because of a captaincy question.

You know it makes sense

Completely agree with your point.

But we are Indians and are used to expect the impossible from THE legend for over 2 decades now

Former Member

LOL.. was expecting a backfire a long back. I dont understand why some people refuse to accept the facts. Its a fact that he is one of the greatest batsman of all time which his records say for themselves. And it is also a fact that he had not been a great Captain. Captaincy being something related more of making the team win arguably more important than being a better player, i would be more happier if sachin could be related to that in future than as someone who smashed all the records individually.

Ohh.. What Can I say....I Shifted my house recently which caused loss of internet for some time .....I am very eager when I get to

Today I have buyed almost all news papers to read how media is pricing laxman and Team india....

Kudos Laxman Kuddos...

we are really Very Very Sorry Laxamn

If you had born in Australia people would have say Another Bradman...Atleast you would have born in Bombay People would have say Another Sachin..... When ever Ganguly is out of team almost all the bengal is karfu that day...

we andhra people doenst know how many times you are out and in...

When sachin plays we all not even close our eyes for second..But that sachin wont close his eyes when you plays..How many people know this reason...

Thats why once again Very Very Sorry Laxman.

Ishant is surely under covers..Common Ishant become one more kapil not Irfan patan

sas,

good reply, you can try this in any news paper or in a news channel(30 minutes program).

there is a reason why selectors not interested in Laxman.

Most of the Indian Cricket players are good enough, but once they succeed in single match they got full publicity, advertisements, parties, pubs. but vvsl is not active in parties and other activities. so selectors not selecting him for other format matches (if win there is a party to celebrate, if loose there is also a party to discuss how to win next match). after a test match every player not interested in parties so he is in text format only.

IN yesterday match. Umpires take wrong decisions on LBW , two for India and One for Australia. the one changed the match towards India.

Cricket is getting excited day by day with the introduction of IPL n T20u2026

Am I the only one who thinks Cricket has become a little boring these days. I blame it on too much cricket. Not a month goes by without a series involving India (or Indian Players). It was good in the olden days. Wait for three to four months for a series and lap up everything you can before the next series began after another three months.

Seriously, I feel the BCCI needs to schedule fewer tournaments. That way the public's interest mounts and the boys too are match-fit.

I have been following the champions league initially. Though lost intrest after the exit of the IPL teams (Deccan Chargers to be precise). I saw the semi final yesterday cape cobras vs trinidad and tobago. T&T seem to be a very strong side and has suprised everyone. Looks like Bravo and Ricardo Pollard can smash anyone out of the park.

The culprits in bowling Praveen kumar and Bhajji provided some final bursts in batting which made the match so close else it was piece of cake for Australia.

Sas,

Saw the matches..they hit sixes just like that..No respect for sixes in these format of cricket and also in these type of leagues. But dont know where these sixers are when coming to play in international cricket.Guess there is lot of pressure when you play cricket for your country and need lot of mental toughness.

Praveen,

Good tight finish.Praveen and Harbhajan wanted to give some justification for their poor bowling with their bat but couldnt finish it in style. anyways i guess they will comeback in the next match. But even if Sachin didnt bat well there is some confidence prevailing in the whole team if he is in the 11.

Its a piece of cake for Aussies but lets see who eats the cherry.

Only Tears are left for the indian Fans......One for happiness for sachin ..another for the reason of stupid other batsmen...

As we Indian's have more centiments..Now the blame is on UPPAL stadium we may get very few matches to Uppal now

When sachin has caught the last ball catch he showed his frustation which he never shows to any one.........And his frustation resulted in very very huge rain of runs.............what a match innings by sachin........WE ARE PROUD TO SAY YOU ARE OUR SACHIN............

this thread really raises a strong desire for a IGNORE FUNCTION for SDN threads in me.

the discussion is quiet off topic for this site as well as many users and it is really excessive.

it feels like some cricket or football fans roaming a pub, turning the volume of the TV set, showing their games, to max and starting to sing their team's anthems. this is too much for a coffee corner!

although I don't want to disturb your enthusiastic discussion, I am kind of sick of 550 completely useless notification emails in only 6 days.

so please SCN, let us (individually) mute some discussions we are definitely not interested in. thx!

Friends,

do not misunderstand me, I do not want to mute your conversation, I even think that it's great that we have a place here where we can discuss off topic issues.

I am just suggesting to have an ignore function for individual threads which do not fall into my interests and which make it impossible for me to 'hear' and follow the rest of the discussion in the coffee corner (when 8 out of 10 emails are about cricket). And i definitely don't want to stop watching the whole CC.

Anyways, I definitely did not want to discourage your excitement about your favourite topic these days and I do not feel to be entitled to (nor do I want to) jugde what's appropriate a topic in CC and what's not.

Kind regards,

Hi Chaitanya,

Thanks for sharing your View....I am not the person who is saying this..Its all the Media with strong proofs making to say..

1) Every single match ends with last over....That too very intresting Prolonging

2) Already ICC informed and warned BCCI about this ..But BCCI saying its fine no issues and rejected the security provided by ICC .....what made to do so?

3) Lalit Modi The Head of IPL ...The one person with lot many hands in all kinds of criminal activities...and intrestingly the games are happening in SA the place where the crime rate is more...

We can say IPL first is really good as it is first But..now 10 min commercial break and all stupid things making lot of non-sense...

My fav for cup

the first of all chances are high for Rajasthan the predictions are based on till now the performances and the team mates joining

1) Rajasthan-> Watson addition advantage , Amit new bowler creating sensation(Now our Amit )

2) Chennai -> Hayden super form , dhoni captancy + form

3) Punjab -> Yuvi is strikign + Breetlee back in attack

4) Deccan chargers ->Now a days only luck is favouring for this team + Fisher man back into attacck.

Rest all Efforting teams ...

For you kind information, Cricket Australia medical staff confirmed than Watson will not allow to fly for South Africa. He will fly immediately to Australia for scans and rehabilitation to recover himself for upcoming T-20 WC. Cricket boards of Australia are keener on Watson for WC instead of IPL.

Wow..Gautham why you stopped with ........i can remember new boy SUMAN in the dots that's it...and we can't relay much on those new players....and observe the list of wins almost every thing batting done by Gilli Gibbs i can say Gilli ,GIBBS for 10-15 overs then we can expect the things in our side...Rohit ,RP on heavy shoulders....

i am saying the team which relay on few players never have the qualification for the word CHAMPIONS.

which our AMIT team is eligible ..:)

@Anderson-> Well KK each one player can turn the match every one in high form .....i am sorry to say this but atleast for PREETHI hugs Players are playing like any thing

that is obvious..It can be seen in teams like CSK,RR,DD...Teams who play collectively and also if one player go down the other takes the responsibility.I hope this is the mantra of being in top of the table. The credit goes to the captains too who give responsibility to young players and make good strategy.

But on the contrary i think DD's captaincy work is not that much satisfactory.

Well phani intresting seems U like a engineering Student

i have fantastic example of engg student...

EXCLUSIVELY FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS

Ques: Prove that 2/10=2

Ans : Normal college students insist Question is "OUT of Syllabus" or incorrect.

but

Engineering Student never know what is correct answer, he/she always think, we are Engineering student and so we should think differently and invent new miracles

So engineering student will solve this example as below

2=two,

10=ten.

therefore Two/Ten = Two/Ten = wo/en.

w=23,

o=15,

e=5,

n=14.

therefore

wo=2315=38

&

en=514=19

Therefore wo/en=38/19=2.

Hence Proved

FOR, Engineers " It doesn't matter ans kya hai, they say ans kya lana he."

English: "It doensnt matter what orginally the answer is, Thwy will ask what answer you want'

*Health Caution :Dont try to post martum the answer paper of the Engg students

so yeah you can expect fireworks from them soon.

Completely disagree.

without any genuine spinner you cannot expect strong come back from Auzzies specially in sub continent.

Let me clear one more point about Punter as all cricket experts who taged him as most successful leader.... yes he was, but don't forget about contribution of Mcgrath,Warne,Gilly that time.

As statistics says out of last 63 test 37 times man of the match shared either between these three players.now the time has to come for Punter to prove his tag(best leader ever).

i guess he will not be able to sustain his tag anymore.

May be one reason of their shameful defeat is that this time Steve Buckner and Mark Benson not came with their squad

India has to prepare harder for the next game.

Australia has to prepare harder for the next game at Firozshah kotla(Its flat dusty track).I played few matches(U21) at same track from Rajasthan.

We already changed our gears up.

And see how Australian media reacts after Mohali defeats they are begging for Warne's comeback:

http://in.sports.yahoo.com/081021/139/6yu95.html

No.

But we have to define phase of their retirement so that we can have their promising substitute like Rohit,Kaif,Yuvi otherwise may be we would face same situation like Auzzies as they are facing(Absence of Mcgrath,Warne,Gilly all lest Aussie at same time).

I still remember Terror of WI cricket in 1990 after that they are still declined their performance and not able to get back their image as like the time of Vivian Richards,Gary Sobers.....

So BCCI should define the phase of their retirement.

Just my 2 cents~

Once upon time we have pardhiv patel who is recruted as indian wicket keeper in age of 16...Though if he make 25 runs a match ...Every one praised him saying of his age he is playing more than....

Every one watched him as Best future indian wicket keeper although he did so many mistakes he has given so many chances..saying he will done through experience...But what happen at last...

Dhoni came into picture and Now no wicket keeper in near bye for almost 5-10 years...

wHAT Happen to the experience gained by Patel....

So my intention is just currently who is playing well..Just procced them..Dont have much deeper look into future which cant be predicted exactly....

Interesting Amit.....Great honour to hear that our scn member is apart of indian cricket team.

No dude I'm was never a part of team india, I played a lots of domestic cricket(Ranji from North zone) from Rajasthan(U21).but somehow couldn't continue my Future with cricket cause of studies.

i had more reasons to quit cricket,as you can see there is very less chance for Rajasthan players to get their place in Team India cause of major BCCI selection committee is from Metro cities. But exception is there like Mahi(Caption of team india).so i prefer to continue with studies.

But i still love cricket very much,if time allows i often watch every match no matters is it Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh test match

i still remember when Kaif smashes 27 runs in my one over, that match was played at Savai maan singh(Jaipur) in '02

Over statistics looks like:2,6,6nb,4,4,4nb,0,1.

Hummm....Really yar...when i was small i wonder....why this beautfiul game is played by only few teams...Why all the rest of countries (like US , russia , china only) are not involving....

So many people in our india are die hard fans of this game (Includes u & me ) ......Although india losses we still watch for ever and ever..

U words are intresting ....Kaif....Is a test player...How can he hit that many runs? Is your bowling bad or your team fielding bad?? Which includes sixers as well

Regards

Sas

Ps: I think u did a mistkae by discontuning cricket....U know BCCI has one scheme that if any one palyed for our india atleast one game also they will pay life long per month 25,000....Which includes all the facilities as well......What u say ?

Thank God you are a better Abaper than a bowler.

But on serious note, even getting to Ranji's is a big deal if you consider the number of applicants waiting in the queue. Good on ya, Mate.

Keep up the good work..... in ABAP that is.

Congrats to India on 2nd Test win.

I am not a happy Aussie.

It's not that we were beaten - it's that we played so badly and there doesn't seem to be any hope of a quick improvement.

1. Indian fast bowlers could reverse swing - Oz bowlers couldn't

2. 2 Indian batsmen scored hundreds and a few got high 50s - Oz highest score for the match 69

3. Indian tweakers took over 10 wickets - Oz tweakers?!

And still you say that?! but any which way you look at it India won by 320 runs!

Hi Ravi

You've missed a figure of speech here. Graham is saying the worser point is not JUST that we lost, but that we never even looked like improving. Your points are all accepted, and indeed you would have to be blind to miss them. At no stage was Graham suggesting India were not legitimate winners. What he was saying was that we were legitimate losers and by all the evidence we will lose the next time.

Hi Ravi,

I think Gareth pretty much summed it up. No need to be such a sore winner.

We shook hands at the end of the game, didn't we? C'mon guys you need to breath easier.

I think the one player you guys are missing is McGrath, he used to be so damn accurate, knocking out the top order for the likes of Warnie to finish the last rites. Warnie was never a threat for India and unless you find another McGrath, I reckon it would be extremely difficult for Oz to hold on the crown..........

It seemed to me that we weren't missing 1 player - we were missing 11.

STOP THE PRESSES

The ACB called my mother last night to open the batting and inject some ticker into the Aussie attack. Hey Ravi, she may be younger than half your team! (just kidding)

Well, what can I say other than wishing India go for the jugular in Delhi after all the

pitch is a 'gift to Kumble' where, though Binga is doing the hard yards, reverse swing may not work!

Anyway, today is Diwali, and people will be celebrating in India with gusto,

setting off fireworks, etc. Here's wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous Diwali!

I was in Kathmandu during Diwali in 2000. Interesting fun walking through those narrow crowded streets and having people drop firecrackers on you.

Hey - maybe I have stumbled on a motivation tactic for the Aussies.

Graham

Are you suggesting I drop firecrackers on my Mum?

Gareth

Yeah it reminds me of my childhood, we used to set these off right in

front of our house on the street. We would wake up at 3 AM to set off

our loudest 'bomb' and make a statement, I hope the Oz cricketers are

not too scared with this but I really want to see a good contest on the field from tomorrow not another one-sided game as in Mohali and Perth.

Perhaps your Mum could be the "drop-er" and the rest of the team could be the "drop-ee's"?

I find cricket to be a slow and boring sport. Of the popular sports in the world, this is the worst one.

Is it meant for slow and boring people?

However, I believe that the new format might make it faster and more interesting.
