Order Field in SO accepts Production Order Document but for reference purposes only

I would like to seek your help in addressing the concerns raised by our client regarding production orders to be entered in a sales order for materials under MTS scenario (strategy group adopted by the material is 40).

Our client would like to use the order-field (VBAP-AUFNR) as the field to enter the production order linked to a certain material in the SO. The need for this requirement is for reference purposes only. In the current set-up, when the client tries to enter a production order document in the field, an BS0027 error is being generated (Create sales document is not allowed to OR54100003). Is there a configuration set-up to be done for this on SD side? Or is it more of on the PP side? May I know what are the configurations to be done?

Please search before posting. Google -> vbap-aufnr site:sap.com -> finds an old question that has already been answered with "there no direct link between the sales order and the production order, only in case of make-to-order and assembly-to-order scenarios".

This is a standard SAP field and it has certain functionality attached to it. You can't simply decide to use it for something else and manually enter some data. IMHO it doesn't make much sense to type in PO manually into SO. If PO is deleted then how will SO be updated?

In my last job, MTO was also used and we didn't store PO number with SO. We had some reports available for that. They showed the PO status, as well as other info that helped sales reps to track the order progress.
