Connecting to ECC 6 system

Hi Experts,

I need to connect to a back end ECC 6 system from an abstract portal component.

So, as the first step I am trying to define the ECC 6 System in System Configuration -> System Landscape -> New System

When I try to create a system, there are lot of options. The following 2 seems relavent to me

a. SAP System with connection string

b. SAP system with dedicated application server

What is the difference between the two?

I am trying SAP System with dedicated application server. I enterred the following details

Application Host: SMSESIDES01.esdev.inside

Logon Method: UIWPD

SAP Client:800

SAP System ID (SID): DES

SAP System Number:00

System Name *: IDES

System Type: SAP_R3

User Mapping Type: Admin

Web AS Host Name:SMSESIDES01.esdev.inside

Web AS Protocol: http

I am confused about the following details. Where can I find them from?

Logical System Name:

Gateway Host:

Gateway Service:

I have done the user mapping for the user I am logged with. When I do a test It does not work. Says HTTP/S connection failed.

Am I missing something? Does anything has to be activated in the ECC system?

The following is the result......

Results

1. The system ID is valid

2. Retrieval of the system was successful

3. The system object represents an SAP system

4. The following parameters are valid: Web AS Protocol (http) Web AS Host Name (SMSESIDES01.esdev.inside)

5. HTTP/S connection failed

Thank you all.
