What are some subtle ways to get yourself fired?

1. Come to work without bathing.

2. Spend a lot of time at work on SDN.

Al Lal,

You bring up two important areas: getting along with others and doing the right work.

It's true that poor hygiene or too strong scents (like perfume) can be repellent to people.

Working on SDN brings up the aspect of doing the right work.

Too often we really don't have a good idea of what the important objectives are. When we don't, we can be working hard and then the boss comes up and tells us we weren't doing the right thing.

"Yes, you do great work on SDN, but where's that bug-fix?"

Now, IF you can show that your time on SDN has Helped you figure out the bug-fix, then it's time well spent.

Sometimes a subtle way to get yourself fired is not being a psychic - being able to read the mind of your boss!

Hello Al Lal,

Based your other recent post about working environment, it is not as if you are going to be the recipient of a generous severance package and "relocation" support... so why bother with being fired? You will only burn bridges behind you by going unshaven and unwashed to work (you might not be allowed to catch the local bus anymore either!). Besides, it would probably take several weeks to build up sufficient aroma, so there must be a better way...

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is stick your pride in your pocket for a moment (if available) and give them one of those "I've met someone else" or "I want to be alone for a while again" speeches in an as nice as possible way. Let them get away with it and "save face" in this little, private, and soon to be terminated, way. That is often what matters most to those who demand that those who remain (or cannot leave) should stand up when they enter the room.

If they are interested in knowing what they did wrong, to be able to learn from it for next time. Don't fall for it! Keep your mouth shut! They either already know it or will not learn anything from your magic ("magic" = how you managed to walk out of prison of your own free will).

Then once you are out, run for it and don't look back... )

Sure...No one likes people that doesn't smell good...

I spend almost my whole working day on SDN...And haven't been fired...So don't agree on this one...

I do this on a daily basis. I also call myself and idiot, stupid, etc... and hit myself on the head. People laughed at first but now they just ignore it. I am now working from home so my dog is the only person who has to put up with it.

You can get away with this quite easily. You simply put one of those handsfree mobile phone things on and it looks like you're on the phone.
