Integration flow is an asset which helps you to define and also graphically represent the overall integration scenario and is made of many integration flow steps (which I think you refer here as elements of the integration flow), which helps in the message translation like mapping, routing, gateway, content enricher etc. which are elements which enable you to build the integration pattern you would like to achieve in the particular integration scenario.
