number format in crystal report

The numbers in formula field in the crystal report is export to 97-2003 excel and stored as General number( like a,b,c) and can not be used by Excel functions,like vlookup. I have to converse them into numbers, like 1,2,3. Is there any way I can do conversion in crystal report? I have tried tonumber() in crystal. It did not work.
