Typical scenarios to use function modules in generic extraction

Hello,

What are the scenarios to use FMs in generic extraction. I have feeling that we can extract any kind of data from tables using views except the scenario where we don't have delta-specific field but we wanted delta feeds from OLAP.

What are the advantages of performing calculations (in order to populate the requird fields) in OLAP systems over BI systems.

Thanks.

Mani

    Hi,

Imagine the scenario where you need to extract data from

tables having no common field between them and thereby preventing you from creating a view on top of those tables..

Or simply consider tables that are highly unrelatd in terms of fields, but you have a requiremnt to extract data from them.

    Refer.

create generic extractor based on 2 tables

Sree and JithuK, Thanks for replays.

I would like to focus on the scenarios of generic extraction which can only be realized by FM, rather then how to do Generic Extraction using FM.

I would like to know more about the scenarios other then the scenario "no common field among tables"

Are there any requirements to extract data from other then the tables such as SPOOLS, CLUSTERS?

Any requirements to perform calculations in OLTP while extraction?

    I appreciate your help.

    Thanks.

    Hi Manyam,

As Jitu has pointed out, FM is used for Generic when there is 1:n(One to Many relationship between the Entities). If its One to One then a View can be used.

With regard to doing calculations in SAP BI and in the Front End(OLAP), its purely scenario specific.

Minor calculations can be done in the Front End, whereas, complex scenarios with major Transformations required will have to be handled in the Transfer / Update Rules or Transformations.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Tom.
