Serial numbers are link to equipment (used with PM - Plant maintenance).It help to track items, such as Shaft for your pump in your plant, using their serial numbers. The serial number can provide additional information such as an item's manufacturing date, warranty data, and so on. The work method is to enter serial numbers during stock entries for items that have a definition of serial numbers management, and to choose relevant serial numbers for stock transfer and release documents.
So you can track a serial number not just as it is in stock (Plant / Sloc) but also after it has been Good Issued and moved around between functional locations (PM).
Example: expensive spares that can be repaired and you need to track the item through it's lifecycle. Ie. electrical motor, pump, gearbox.
