Performance Improvement in DP by increasing the parameter CACHE_SIZE

Former Member

Hi

We have a NW04 SCM 4.1 system running, which we use for DP primarily.

The response times in the shuffler has to be improved when loading the data, Users feels that the response time of 3-4 seconds for drill down is a little too much. Also the initial data load times vary, which they think are high for them.(4-5 seconds)

What are the typical response times in Demand planning in the shuffler...????

We are looking at ways to improving the system performance, both fm a functional side as well as from the technical side...

We were looking at the Note 719652 - Setting initial parameters for liveCache 7.5 or 7.6

Of all the parameters we were looking at in the note, the parameter CACHE_SIZE looks to be hugely impacting the performance.

The Total Data in the Live Cache (the permanent Data) is right now 2.2 GB...and CACHE_SIZE is set to right now 217840..which is approxmmately equal to 1.7 GB's..(8 KB pages)..

We plan to increae the parameter to approx 875000 or 7GB's approx..Is that Ok to do as to us the CACHE_SIZE looks small.....???

We actually tried increasing the CACHE_SIZE to this value on our test server(identical in size), but the used data cache only grows upto the permanent data size, and does not get utlilized fully(total data cache size 6.7 GB's and Used was 2.98GB's...I would think that's ok...

The total Data volumes added are equal to 10GB's in size.

Is that the correct thing to do...??

Our Live Cache server physical memory is 16 GB's... and the SWAP is approximately 23GB's...

The OMS_HEAP_SIZE is set to 10 GB's on the server.

Our LiveCache version is 7.5.0 BUILD 035-123-123-944

Any ideas anyone, if we are looking at the correct parameters??

any recommendations..??

Thanks

Hello sap ques ,

1)

The information given in this thread it's not enough to get clear on the reported performance issue.

It will be helpful to know about the current SCM SPs & liveCache/LCA builds;

to review the application scenario on your system; to check if there are inconsistencies on your system.

The performance issues could be due

    • the complicate application scenario

    • inconsistency of the database/liveCache data

    • wrong configuration of the liveCache parameters

    • problems which has to be fixed ABAP code < see the SAP note 1024845, for example >

or LCA/liveCache < service.sap.com/liveCache -> Release-Dependent -> SCM 4.1 >

As SAP customer you have the option to get the SAP support. I recommended you,

please, create the SAP ticket to the component 'SV-BO-SCM', the SAP support could logon via

OSS to your system and take a look closer on this issue.

Please provide the application scenario to reproduce the problem.

"The Total Data in the Live Cache (the permanent Data) is right now 2.2 GB...and CACHE_SIZE is set to right now 217840..which is approximately equal to 1.7 GB's..(8 KB pages)..

-> It's also good to know the statistics of the datacache usage in the liveCache.

According your information I agree, that the value of the CACHE_SIZE is too small & need to be increased. Please check if have enough main memory, SWAP settings to do so.

"We actually tried increasing the CACHE_SIZE to this value on our test server(identical in size), but the used data cache only grows upto the permanent data size, and does not get utilized fully(total data cache size 6.7 GB's and Used was 2.98GB's...I would think that's ok…"

-> If you will have more liveCache activities & the open liveCache transactions the datacache usage will be increased.

"The total Data volumes added are equal to 10GB's in size. Is that the correct thing to do...??"

-> So far it's fine. Did you run the 'sizing' analysis of how much data are you planning to have in liveCache?

Please check the value of the database parameter MAXDATAVOLUMES listed at the beginning in the knldiag file, be sure that you are able to add the data volume if it will be needed.

When there is no more memory available in the database, the database hangs. You must make free memory available in the form of a new data volume. You can add new volumes while the database is online. More information about this topic is available is in the liveCache documentation (SAP Note 767598).

"Our Live Cache server physical memory is 16 GB's... and the SWAP is approximately 23GB's...

-> What is your OS? Do you have another liveCache applications running on the liveCache server?

Do you mean the liveCache parameter OMS_HEAP_LIMIT set to 10GB ?

Hi Natalia,

Thanks a lot for the response and applogise for the late response in acknowledging it.

The points you highlighted really helped us out. Our main problem of slow response times while drilling down in the shuffler was improved by the SAP note 1024845, I mean it helped us a lot.

Also since we have increased the data cache size(since we had a lot if main memory and swap was negligble), the initial reponse time to load data has also come down, not a lot, but yes definitely something noticeble.

Thanks a lot for all the advise and help. In case of ay further problems, we will open up a messge with SAP.

Thanks
