Splitting a Double stack system to AS ABAP and AS Java

We have a NW 04 Portal System ( AS ABAP ) and due to Performance issues we want to Split the AS ABAP and AS Java separately via System Copy.Has this combination ever been tried and if yes are there any success stories...
