Shipment Document vs. Bill Of Lading Document

Hi All,

I have question related to Shipment & Bill Of Lading Document. We are planning to create shipment document by grouping all deliveries based on the transportation zone. One shipment document could have deliveries for several ship to customers. We would like to print one BOL document per ship to party. We can't use delivery document for BOL as we could have many deliveries for a ship to party. Shipment document will create only one BOL document for all the deliveries included in it (that include all ship to parties).

What is the best practice of creating shipment document and creating BOL.? Shipment document should be created at ship to party level to generate one combine BOL document or is there any other option.

Hi Robby,

As I understand, you will like to have one BOL for each ship-to party. So it means that one shipment could have more than one BOL.

The idea of BOL is that the tucker or the shipment should have legal documents reflecting what its carrying and to where it is carrying all in one document. So tht if somebody stops and checks the shipment personnel could show them one document. So the best practices have been to print one document for whole shipment.

Further in many countries its a legal requirement to generate on BOL for one shipment irrespective of how many places it will be dropping the stuff.

So you will have to bring in ore more level of encapsulation before shippment so as to differentiate on the basis of ship-to party. And my suggestion would be to use handling units. So you will be able to pack on the basis of ship-to and generate subsets of documents for each ship-to.

But then these would not be BOL.You will have to call them packing list or Manfest or something else.
