Portal Implementation - Landscape question

I need some advice on setting up an Enterprise Portal. In Particular, the OS and Java versions.

I have an ECC 6.0 system on Windows server 2003 (x64) Java version 1.4.2.16

I have a Portals system (Java AS, EP, EPC, DI) on Windows server 2003 (x64) Java version 1.4.2.16

I have errors with the Developer studio on the Portals server. It installed correctly, but when I launch it, I have errors. I suspect it has to do with the 64 bit OS. (I can provide more details if needed.)

I have installed the Developer studio on my Windows XP pc (Java version 1.4.2.9).

It comes up ok, but I have not yet imported any objects from the Portals server.

I'm concerned about using different Java components on my pc vs. the components in DI (due to the different versions).

So, my question is:

Should the portals system (with DI) be on a 32 bit platform? Is this needed to properly work with the Developer Studio?

If the portals system is on a 32 bit platform, then will it be able to run the apps that correspond to ECC 6.0 (64 bit) such as ESS/MSS?

Thanks for any advice. Points will be awarded.
