Are you Picky?

Former Member

I am picky when it comes to replying to questions on this forum. If I feel the OP is asking question out of this league and asking very general question on a complicated subject, I let the others reply. There are however, a lot of very nice helpful people around here that have a lot more patience than me.

So, who are you? Picky or Not-Picky?

Hi,

I'm more and more picky.

I don't even read anymore messages with subjects including :

"Hi, Gurus"

"Urgent"

"Steps by steps"

Olivier

I simply fail to understand why most of the people can't do a basic search before posting...Wants to get spoon feeded for each and everything...Even me getting picky these days...just don't want to help those who can't help themselves!

I'm the same as Oliver - now really very picky - unless I'm having a bad day, that's when I'm not so picky but my responses are not quite as restrained - e.g. Well if you bothered to search you would of found this.

...you would of found this...

I always wanted to know what that means.

And, have you searched the forum?

actually I once searched the internet for phrases like that one and the explanation is something like this:

1) correct phrase, not abbreviated: you would have found this

2) correct phrase, abbreviated: you would've found this

3) phonetically this sounds quiet similar to the pronounciation of 'you would of', although latter doesn't mean a thing

4) people not so knowledgeable in the english language considered 'you would of' to be a legitimate phrase with the meaning of 'you would have' and used it in written comunication

5) through the course of time the phrase made it's way even into the offices of the best consulting firms

my 2 cents,

anton

How about "Do the NEEDFUL"?

Research this one...

This should be my standard reply for people not taking the effort before asking or posting.

Please "do the needful" before posting this question!

Folks,

Am I picky? No, I am not.

Sometimes, I wish people searched the forums for answers before making a post.

Sometimes, I wish they tried to use better English.

Sometimes, I wish their tone did not imply it was their birthright to get answers and complete solutions, nothing less.

....

....

Nevertheless, if I can give pointers to solutions, I do. There was a time when I could have contributed, but didn't. Over the last year or so SDN has helped me a lot in 'transitioning' to a new area - I found lot of answers on SDN.

Now, I try to contribute without being judgemental. If the moderator did not throw a post out - it is a valid one.

Cheers!

Mathew.

It definately depends on my mood and the quality of the question. With quality I also mean language. And I sometimes try to get the OP to show his effort invested so far before actually answering the question. That usually gets them fairly quiet. If I ignore a faq/lazyness question/job interview prep I always hope it stays unanswered as long as possible but hey, in come the patient people

I have a feeling that a lot of "regulars" on here started out as kind hearted, helpful, non-picky types. BUT, after seeing the numerous lazy posts, duplicates, points hunters, "do my work for me"/"get me a job" posts, etc. I think they gradually (exponentially?haha) get worn down and change over time to the "picky" and jaded types. 😃

I guess this post if more of a rant!
