Trading partner is used by the consol module to track inter-co trx within SAP. But even if the consol module is not used you could still use it to trace inter-co trx. Each trading partner is a company code. Therefore each inter-co FI doc will also keep track of a consistent trading partner code to denote the inter-co transactions. There are several defaults that can be done from GL , Customer or Vendor profile.
