Hi Rajesh,
You have not mentioned your sources (always best), so all we can do is guess here but the reason that these rule-of-thumb recommendations vary is because they are... rule-of-thumbs. Rough estimates. Ballpark figures. If these questions show up in an exam, I hope the exam is an old one as, in my view, this would be a not-so-good question.
I did a quick Google search on your question to find rule-of-thumb answers, which returned this PDF, amongst others:
It is from August 2013, so that would be SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 06 ; in other words, a very old rule-of-thumb. Use with extreme care.
It argues for 2*RAM + 2-3*RAM, say 5*RAM to be safe.
Even more confused? No worries. A lot has happened in the field of HANA sizing since 2013.
There is some excellent information on this topic, which addresses the different factors you have to consider (greenfield, migration, S4, BW, etc). Like to read?

Recently, we updated the sizing video tutorial on the SAP HANA Academy
Does this answer your question?
Success with exam,

Have you already checked the information which is available in the official documentation regarding Sizing SAP HANA? In think using the Quick Sizing Tool will already answer your question.
