Difference of QALS-SELMATNR and QALS-MATNR

I have a simple question as to the SELxxx fields in table QALS, e.g.

QALS-SELMATNR, I have seen in most of cases it has the same value with QALS-

MATNR, but in some case this field is blank. So what is the difference?

SELMATNR is the material number from the assigned inspection plan or material spec:

John is correct on but just a point of clarity for the OP.

Usually these fields are the same. But SAP does allow the possibility to manually assign the specification selection. By using the QA02 you can change the specification material number to a different one then the material being inspected.

This can be used for instance to reinspect a technical grade material against a pharmaceutical grade specification to see if the material can be resold as a different grade. This might be done for manually created lots (89's) to regrade, or retest the material.
