SAP recommends that you use a single System Landscape Directory (SLD). The cost of running the SLD infrastructure increases with the number of SLD instances. In particular, adding a second SLD involves additional costs for synchronizing data between these two instances. From a cost perspective, it is preferable to configure a single SLD.
The following factors can make a multiple-SLD architecture necessary:
Legal constraints
Company Rules
Network Constraints (e.g. firewalls, availability of resources)

Hi,
You can have Single SLD for your whole Landscape ( DEV, QTY,PRD)
You may have saparate separate SLD's for Individuals also.
It depends on your Requirement.

Hi,
SLD is the central information repository for your system landscape. It contains information about technical systems, landscapes, business systems, products, and software components in your system landscape. You can view and manage this information in the SLD.
You could use local SLDs to connect to one central SLD, that way you could have multiple SLDs, even you could have remote SLD to connect with the various technical ladnscapes
Check with below links

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/24/8fa93e08503614e10000000a114084/frameset.htm
You can perform the following activities in the SLD:
● Create technical systems
● Create landscapes, add systems to landscapes, create hosted systems, and add sub-landscapes to landscapes
● Create business systems and business system groups
● View the Software Catalog, create third-party products and software components, and define software dependencies
● Define name prefixes for development and reserve names.

There 1 only 1 type of SLD in XI. The installations could be separate and accordingly u may have
1. 1 SLD for whole landscape (dev, QA, Prod)
2. Multiple SLDs for the landscape
