storage type indicator

What is the significance of storage type indicator?

If it signifies that the storage type to be searched is bulk or high rack ……then what is the need of it because in the putaway strategies at the end or in the last coloum I will be putting the value for that storage type ……in materail master in the field stock placement i need to assign the value of this indicator but question is how it works
