You have a requirement that you need to generate a report for the users, let assume that the reports requirement needs 20 fields and among them 15 of them are already in the standard BC query, but 1 of them is not in the report but the field is available in the cube, 4 of them are not even in the cube, but among the missing 4 fields, 2 of them are already in the underlying DSO but the remaining two of them are not even in the data source. If the business really needs the missing two fields badly, then you can start enhancing the standard extractor, otherwise, you can just make the changes to the cube and report and meet part of the requirement. If you have to do the changes in the extractor, then you need to come up with the logic how you are planning to get those missing fields, and how you will be handling delta if you are using user exits. If you make the changes to the extractor, there are other things like you need to reload the data, and also do a setup table for LO extractors. If there is existing delta going on, then you need to clear the extraction queue before changing the extractors.
