Has anyone had to use the manufacturer's Part Number (MPN) as the SKU (Material Number) ?
If so...
What had to be done regarding the 18 character limitation on MATNR (SAP Material Number)?
Hi Mahesh!
Currently, about 10% of our active materials have this situation...the practice here has always been to utilize the Manufacturer's Part Number as the internal SKU. The problem is in 'culture' and what how all our prducts are now labled/stocked and how the Procurement and Sales functions are executed based on this practice. I have looked at the MPN feature, but it doesn't extend passed Purchasing (into Inventory Control, Sales..etc.). Translating the internal number to the MPN is problematic in many of the transactions/reports.
I have also looked at the DIMP Long Material number add-on, but this solution also brings 'bagage' with it... some functions (CO) and other 'gotchas'.. (scary stuff). If this feature was fully functional accross ALL integrated modules in a seamless fashion then it would be viable.

Hi Tom,
Why cant you make use of the Manufacturer's part number field in the purchasing view to fullfill your requirement.
Thanks
Mahesh
