We are in the process of upgrading from 4.6C to ECC 6.0, and have no need for Unicode. We did successfully upgrade our system in a test environment, but realized during functional testing that we needed Adobe Document Service (ADS) for W-2 processing. One of the modules that we use is USA payroll. Ive seen messages about a work around to still use SAPscript for W-2s, but we dont want to do that. It is our understanding that we will need to install a Java stack to take advantage of ADS, and that in order to install the Java stack (which needs to be Unicode), we will need to migrate our ABAP stack to Unicode as well.
What Im trying to find out is the best way to do this. It is my understanding that we cant convert our 4.6C system to Unicode before upgrading; rather it needs to be done at the same time. Ive also read that SAP does not recommend doing a Unicode conversion and an upgrade at the same time. I will mention that we are totally USA, so we dont need multiple languages.
Ive spent a lot of time searching for documents that will help, but Im still confused on how to proceed. Im specifically interested in the best sequence to use, with the consideration of minimizing downtime. I would appreciate any input that you can provide.
Thank you,
Leeanna Travis
I don´t know where you read, that SAP doesn´t recommend doing it at the same time. Basically, there´s a special procedure for this:
http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap
--> Unicode Conversion Guides
--> CU&UC Guides
--> Combined Upgrade & Unicode Conversion Guide 4.6C

I accidently awarded points for solving this issue to the wrong responder. I'm attempting to fixt that by reopening the question.

But the procedure of CU&UC is not easy becauser there isn't a lot of peaple doing it.
It's not really more difficult than doing it one after each other. And since it's a standard procedure developed by SAP it's supported and you will get all necessary help in case you have problems.
It's complicated and if it's the first upgrade that's done I would certainly not start with that one - I agree with you on that point.

Thanks Markus.
Wel.. in that regards, Leeanne, you would be left with no options, except going for unicode and then having ADS.
As mentioned earlier, you can go for combined unicode and upgrade or you can go for unicode after upgrade.

Hi Leeanna,
As per your requirement of ADS, you would need a Java addin.
You can have ADS without going for unicode conversion.
After the upgrade, you would need to have java addin and have ADS.
Please go through the following SAP notes to have better understanding about the installation and configuration of ADS.
Notes 778479 and 667313.
Depending upon your requirement, download the guide from market place as mentioned in the notes.
In case of any specific information, please get back.
Regards,
Imran
