Gross Weight and Net Weight in Variant Configuration

I have a configurable material (KMAT), custombike.

Following, I have 4 classes assigned to my custombike so I can use class items on my BOM instead of using individual line items for every possibility. I have a class for frame selection, one for wheel selection, one for seat selection, and one for handlebar selection.

My pricing is accomplished through VK11(PR00 for base price, VA00 for variant pricing), linked to materials through VK30 and CU50. I did not use dependencies for pricing.

When creating a sales order (VA01), my pricing updates correctly based on which variants I choose. The issue is gross and net weight. The guides I've read all say assign weight to the variant class. I have 4 classes. If I create a reference characteristic GROSS_WEIGHT (VCSD_UPDATE, BRGEW), do I assign it to each variant class? Or, do I create a 5th variant class just for weight, and assign that reference characteristic to it? Or is there a different way to update gross and net weight (VCSD_UPDATE, NTGEW)?
