Change Data Element Characteristics to maintain change history

Hello Friends,

I need to maintain the Change History for the Classification Codes of the Customers.

XD02 -> Menu -> Extras -> Classification.

Now , SAP itself maintains the change history of Many of the Table fields in CDPOS and CDHDR , only if the Change Document (Data Element -> FurtherCharacteristics -> Change Document ) of the Field Dataelement is enabled.

Now i require to maintain the Change History for a field , whose Data element Change Document is disabled.

In this scenario , can i change the standard Dataelement characteristics to Make the Change Document Enable??

Is this change recommendable or is there anything else i cando to mania the history of that field.

Please suggest .
