Design Studio 1.6 upgrade after upgrade to BI 4.2

Hi SAP,

We have recently upgraded our BI4 environment BI 4.2 SP3 Patch 8. The old release was BI 4.1 SP3. However, we also have Design Studio installed on server which is on release 1.6 SP4 Patch 2.

The problem is that it was most probably installed while base release was still on BI 4.1 SP3. In the inventory.txt it says SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio 1.6 for BI Platform 4.1.

In the Design Studio install guide it clearly says that after BI 4 environment upgrade to 4.2, also Design Studio has to be upgraded to 4.2 release (I assume by executing setup.exe from 42 folder). However, customer has tested Design Studio functionality and actually experienced no errors whatsoever. I am a bit confused as in the manuals it suggests that it should actually not work in this combination.

I assume the SDK has been upgraded with higher release, but is there anything specific which has to be looked at and tested to prove that it is actually not working? It's a kind of strange situation:)

I don't think there is a separate version of DS for BI 4.2. Design Studio installer will not be in 4.2 Install folder.

Hi Jawahar,

thanks for input, I think I wasn't clear enough. Design Studio install package has 3 different install folders - one for each BI 4 release - 40, 41 and 42. Depending on your base version of BI 4.X, you should choose the corresponding installer -> that is what I meant with 4.2 install folder.

You are right. My bad. As Tammy mentioned above, you need to install 4.2 version of Design Studio even if you don't see any issues currently.

Hi Erik - while it may work, I am not sure SAP will support it if the related Design Studio tBI4.2 add-on isn't also installed on the server.

OK, thanks for the answer, I think that says it all. Just one additional - in case we decide to perform full content migration to a brand new environment with Design Studio 1.6 for BI 4.2 add-in installed, do you think we still need to upgrade the Design Studio in old source environment to the proper 4.2 release?

I would update it in DEV first, test, and then deploy to production environment
