FM for Material Configure Variant value update

Hi Gurus,

Greetings.

I need your help in finding FM/BAPI/IDOC type to update the Variant characteristics values of a Material. Below screenshots show how this task is manually done.

Step 1: go to the Basic data 2 view of the Material and at the bottom we have "Configure Variant" and you key in the Configurable material (Material Type KMAT).

Step 2: Screen appears as shown in Image 2 and you can key in the values against the Characteristics.

Step 3: Save the Material.

I have browsed the SAP forums and help portals and they have mentioned to use FM CUXM_SET_CONFIGURATION. I tried to use this but couldnt update the Material with the required values. May be I am missing any value to be passed.

I request if anyone has the code snippet on how the FM CUXM_SET_CONFIGURATION should be called.

Also, it would be helpful if you can provide any other way of updating Characteristics values for the Variant.

PS: Classification BAPIs will not work here as there is no Class value for such assignments.
