Hi
We are upgrading from SAP 4.6C to ECC. I have few questions.
1) Will the customization made in Non Customer name space (by mistake) be over written by SAP after upgrade
for example in Material Master field selection grp is made as "VEHI" where this is non customer name space. Will this be over written
2) How to Protect variants against upgrade
3) Is there any document available from Functional point of view as to what are the Risk Areas to look forward to.
Kindly let me know.
Thanks & regards,
Madhup

The upgrade will stop and will ask you to adjust your modification. So it will not be overwritten by default
> 2) How to Protect variants against upgrade
You will get asked if you want to save the variants, if you say yes there, the upgrade will put them into a specific table, do the upgrade and restore them. However, due to program changes they may or may not work after the upgrade.,

Read the deltas between 4.6c and ERP 2005 on http://service.sap.com/releasenotes for each "module".

Hi Markus,
Thanks a lot for the quick reply.
I have small doubts on "variants"
Lets say we have a custom report and it has a variant. So will this be protected and will SAP prompt for it.
Because SAP will overwrite all customer code.
If yes (SAP will not protect variants) then is there anyway we can take a back up of variants and protect them
Thanks again for your help.
Best regards,

Do you mean with "custom report" a z-program? If yes, then this will be still available after the upgrade.
SAP will not overwrite customer code - if it´s in the correct namespace. Otherwise you will get prompted to do adjustments (for the code, not for the variants).
Check note 712297 - Short dumps occur if you restore variants when upgrading
