BW/HANA using IQ as NLS - do I have to use SDA in order to retrieve data?

Hi folks,

I have a question surrounding data retrieval. We are on BW7.30/SPS15, HANA SPS12

If we build NLS as a cold storage to our HANA system (in order to archive off old data) do we need to configure SDA (i.e. virtual tables) in order to pull/read data back from IQ into SAP BW or can we pull directly from IQ itself (thus bypassing HANA altogether)?

I cant seem to find any documentation which answers my question. Hope you can help.

Much appreciated for the reply Frank.

So just so I fully understand, in order for the SAP BW user to retrieve data from the cold store NLS (IQ system) the only way is to use SDA?

Hello Andrew,

Yes, Smart Data Access (SDA) is the IQ NLS way of access for both BW on HANA and BW/4HANA:

SAP HANA Smart Data Access (SDA) for Near-Line Storage in SAP IQ

SAP HANA Smart Data Access

Andrew,

As Frank pointed out the preferred method is to configure BW to use SDA for all reads to SAP IQ (NLS). But you are not required to use SDA for reads. If you don't configure SDA to SAPIQ in HANA the BW ABAP stack will default to the IQ ODBC drivers and all reads from BW to NLS are handled via the DBSL.

Hope this helps.
