Hi Gurus,

Can anyone let me know whether the following facilities provided in MSproject are there in PS

1) Task(Activity in PS) with fixed duration

2) task (Activity in PS) with Fixed work

3) Task (Activity in PS) with Fixed unit.

If you have a solution please explain me how to achieve this.

Abhishek

Hi Abhishek,

In PS we have internal activities assigned to network, where in we can put the values for duration, work etc..

Hi Sreekanth,

In MS project when u specify a Activity as fixed work ,then if u increase te no. of resources assigned to complete that activity , the system reduces the duration accordingly.this is helpful while scheduling as I can crash the time of the project by assigning more resouces to the task.

How do i achieve this in PS ?

Abhishek

Hai Abhishek

When u add an internal activity or task to a WBS/Network-

u can find - Calculation key.

This calculation key consists like - calculate work/duration/no of capacities/maintain manually. u can set in Config - OPUU based on ur requirement. or can be selected in the internal activity.

If u want work with workcenter then need to maintain the resources in the workcenter. If not also can work.

U can achieve ur requirement based on the calculation key. While achieving check the calendar , if workcenter.

HI,

Thanks for the reply Annu, but i need some more information. I'll explain u the scenario for which i am looking for a solution.

I have a project which is to end on a specific date. i create the project in PS with all activities . some of the activities are of fixed duration i.e even if u assign more resources to these the duration would not change , whereas there are some which are of fixed work, i.e if i assign more resources to it, I can reduce the time taken for the activity.

Now I schedule the project and find out that the start date is in past .To correct this I need to crash the project . to do this I'll assign more no. of resources to the activities which are of fixed work and then schedule again.

Now i expect the system to recalculate the duration(ie. reduce the activity duration) according to the resources added and give me a new start date.

I am able to do this in MS project but still not able to figure out how to achieve this thru PS.

If u coul give me the solution in a detail manner , it would be of great help.

Hai Abishek

1) u have mentioned that "I have a project which is to end on a specific date" means - duration is fixed which should not cross beyond that date.

For this u need to set scheduling scenario as "Top down" - Control data in project definition. If u want the Project to alert - set in OPUU - Network profile - select the profile which u r using for the Project - Under Network -"Check.WBS.Act - set this to "E" -based on this settings the project will not allow to increase the duration as the date in fixed.

2) i expect the system to recalculate the duration(ie. reduce the activity duration) according to the resources added and give me a new start date.

-- can u tell me in SAP PS how r u going to manage the resources -means through HR-workcenter or just numbers??

3) to calculate the duration based on the resources - set the calculation key - either in OPUU - under activities - Internal process activities - set the calculation key to "1".

In which version r u working to explore the said scenario.

Hi,

1) Since my end date is fixed , i'll have to use bottom up scheduling rather than top down.

2)HR is not implemented here. Is there any wayout to do this.

3) i am using ECC 6.0.

Hai Abhishek

1) Since my end date is fixed , i'll have to use bottom up scheduling rather than top down.

First create the project with activities its duration - schedule the project using bottom up with forward scheduling to get the end date or backward scheduling to get the start date.while doing this follow the step-2). Once the date is fixed use can use Top down and do the settings which mentioned in earlier message. By this U will have control on the Project with respect to duration and system will not allow to cross based on end date in the Project definition.

2)HR is not implemented here. Is there any wayout to do this.

U need to just enter the no of resources as NUMBER in the interal activity and mention their effort-if needed in PERCENT . Enter the total hours of work to be spent by this activity in the WORK.

Choose Calculation key as "calculate duration" or set in network profile" which will calculating the duration - system will check based on the calendar in the ProjectProfile.

Based on the above said settings(using Top down and set as E in network profile for Check WBS sett) - while scheduling the project - if the activity duration is exceed which system will not allow to save -means need to increase the resources which will reduce the duration to finish the activity. Increasing the resources to be done manually.
