Default Phone Number format in XK01/XK02

I have a requirement to store the format of all the telephone numbers in TCode XK02 in a (xxx) xxx-xxxx format upon save.
I tried the enhancement SAPMF02K. I was able to change the format, but it didn't save the changes.

I also looked at BTE 1420 and 1421, but the enhancement documentation indicates that the BTE is triggered after the save.

Looking for suggestions
