What is being backed up when you backup a solution instance in SAP CAL?

Hello,

We have an S/4HANA 1610 Fully-Activated Appliance in CAL (on AWS) and we tried backing up the solution instance thrice.

1st time on October 18: Backup took 30 minutes to complete

2nd time on October 28: Backup took 15 minutes to complete

We then deleted this 2nd backup instance and ran it again.

3rd time on October 28: Backup took 1 minute to complete

We just wanted to know why the backup elapse time is decreasing. Is what's being backed up just the delta from the last backup instance?

Another question is are all servers within that instance being backed up? The S/4HANA Fully-activated Appliance is composed of 4 servers: For NW AS, Java AS, BI and Windows RDP.

Does backing up the instance mean the configurations made in the S/4HANA system are saved and can be restored at a later times should data loss happen?

Thank you.

Michael
