change outbound Idoc status

Hi

Can we change the Idoc status programatically from an user exit? To be more specific, I have a requirement in which the Idoc will be triggered from an output type. I am writing some checks and validations in that exit. My requirement is if any validation fails, I s'd change the Idoc status to 51 with proper error message. How can we achieve this?
