Asset Management in SAP

Hi,

We are planning to implement Asset Management through SAP in our Company. We are in the planning phase. We have decided to label every physical asset in the company using barcodes. These barcodes will be scanned using a scanner & asset movement will be tracked accordingly. Right now we are facing a problem - A computer system (broadlevel comprising of a monitor, keyboard,CPU & mouse)will have only one asset number (auto generated in SAP)& hence have only one label with a unique barcode. But suppose if only a monitor (a part of a computer system) is moved from one location to a new location then if the label on the monitor (in the new location) is scanned, our records will indicate that the entire computer system has been moved to the new location whereas the fact is that only monitor is moved to the new location.

Is there is a provision in SAP where we can track asset movement in such cases?

Please advice.

Thanks

Loki.

Hi

In such case create Computer as main asset and CPU,Monitor,Keyboard and Mouse as sub Assets in SAP.

This will help you to track the assets individually.

Thanks hari for the quick response. But still have few questions. We would be generating a barcode using the asset number from SAP. By using your logic we will be generating different barcodes for different sub assets. Please let me know if i m wrong.

Thanks

Well Hari, the only problem I see with this approach is that we will have to assign a cost to all the sub assets. For example, every monitor is assigned a value of 1rupee. In this case, for 2000 old monitors we will have an additional cost of 2000rupees. This would create discrepancy in our finance record books.

Please advice.

Hello Loki,

maybe I do not get the point, whne you mention Asset Management do you mean FI-AA or PM or even both? Usually assets like (Computers, servers, motors, gearboxes etc.) are used as PM-equipments and in some cases they are linked to the FI-AA asset ID of the company´s inventory.

To answer your question - either your financial record book is right, then there are no 2000 monitors or the monitors are there, but they are missing in your financial record book.

How do you get out of the issue.

Maybe you should think of using multiple PM-equipments and assign them to just one asset id.

The movment of the PM-Equipment can be tracked by your scanner via the EQ-ID and it does not have an effect in FI.

Hope this helps.
