Inventory tracking

I wanted to conduct a stock take through the inventory tracking, needed an assistance how to go about it by using barcodes instead of item codes?

I wish to use a scanner to scan the barcode on the item then fill in the stockquantity and then reconcile. This is for my client, supermarket environment, with 17000 active items.

Hence the request.
