BI Java upgrade without ABAP

Hello SCN community,

We are planning to upgrade BI Java 7.01 ( SPS 06) dual stack system to higher BI Java version leaving BW ABAP(7.01 SP6) as it is.My question is, Is it possible to upgrade BI Java alone to higher version i.e. to 7.02,7.03/731,7.40 ? I came across an SAP note 1645590 which says "in general it is possible" with some exceptions.Checking out here if anyone has executed this scenario in real.If yes, what is the approach followed and challenges/issues faced with this approach?

Thanks,

Hari

Hi Hari,

From a technical point of view it may be possible, but the Software Update Manager (SUM) will consume a stack file generated by Maintenance Planner. The Maintenance Planner will only deliver a product stack as the target. The SUM has the option to update the patch level of the Java components without the stack XML independently, but only the patch level, the Support Package level and Release level require a stack XML file.

The best approach would be to perform the Dual Stack Split using the Software Provisioning Manger, and after that, the ABAP and Java can be maintained independently.
