can QIM in a side-by-side scenario use PI between the QIM and ERP systems?

I am looking into the possibility of installing QIM in a side-by-side scenario and haven't been able to find anything on using it with PI. It seems to use RFCs and such, but we are wondering whether it can or should not use PI between it and the ERP system(s) it may be connected to?

If it can be used, it this impacting the out of the box ease of connectivity?
