6> Portal is a concept like "desk". www.yahoo.com, www.google.com are also their portals.

>> Enterprise Portal just like "the desk for office". That's one more suitable for a company which is is a single point entry to various systems background, role based system and etc...

>> A n d SAP Enterprise Portal is a program we're learning by doing now.

Hi Lokesh,

additional to 1: SAP uses sometimes the abbreviation XSS, which is ESS and MSS together....

ESS and MSS are business packages and its version depends on the portal and the backend version. The latest versions use Webdyn Pro for Java. In January SAP will release the first Webdyn Pro for ABAP Scenarios. In the following years ( -2009 ?),

the Webdyn Pro for Java ESS Scenarios will fade out....

4. The portal is an application, not just a simple website. A portal has a personalized navigation and can have Single Sign On (SSO) to other system user management, which means 1 login, no more login for the other systems, since they trust each other....

Since the other questions are answered, Ill answer some:

> 1. What is ESS and MSS?

ESS (employee self services) MSS (Manager self services) are SAP Portal Business packages that are nothing but preconfigured portal content containing (iviews pages roles systems etc). These iViews are applications that fetch or update data from and to the backend SAP ERP HR module. As the name suggests they are applications that facilitatae day to day activities of employees/managers.

There are guides on configuring ESS/MSS.

> 6. What is the Difference between Normal Portal and

> Enterprise portal? What are the advantages in

> Enterprise portal?

A Portal technical speaking is a single point entry to various services. Your bank site for instance is a portal.

In SAP, Portal,Enterprise portal, NetWeaver Portal all refer to the same thing.

Hope this helped you. If it did consider rewarding points.

4.what is the differnce between portal and web page? >>

Portal contains the development environment as well as the runtime environment.

Development Environments include PDK (Portal development kit for JAVA and .NET)

Portal in no way can be compared to a normal web page. It has innumerable features.

It provides Single point of access to SAP and non-SAP information sources.

It provides role based access to its users.

It integrates the User administration and Security aspects….

5. When does Portal Development Kit Come into picture?

Portal Development Kit (PDK) is an Environment to develop the Content/Applications in Portal using the NWDS(NetWeaver Developer Studio).

We develop applications and generate the ".par" files and deploy it in the portal. In the portal we develop iviews using these .par files and thus the content works in portal.

3. How can I integrate the user management of the portal with that of other systems?

Integration can be done in portal by navigating to --- System Administration >> System Configuration >> UME Configuration.

Here you can configure the LDAP/other UME system to User Management of the Enterprise Portal.
