In the data modeling phase, it is very important to determine if a dimension table will be degenerated, and then explicitly set it as a line item dimension (parameter setting on the InfoCubeĀ’s dimension entry). In this case, the dimension table is omitted and dimension entries in the fact table reference directly to the SID table. On the one hand, this saves one table join at query runtime and, on the other hand, it saves the determination of the dimension IDs at data load time.

Line-item dimensions arise in nearly every case where the granularity of the fact table represents an actual working document like an order number, invoice number, sequence number.

Define large dimensions as line item dimensions (e.g. document number or customer number) if (as a rule of thumb) the dimension table size exceeds 10 % of the fact table(s) size; B-tree is generally preferable for cases where there is high cardinality (high number of distinct values), e.g., document number (only ORACLE provides the alternatives B-tree and bitmap index).

    PS -

Line-item dimensions may not contain more than one characteristic.

Note that for line-item dimensions, an F4-help (in the frontend) is only possible on master data values, not on dimension entries.

A line-item dimension of an InfoCube containing data cannot be reconverted to a non line-item dimension without bigger effort.

    Hope it Helps

    Hi Rahul,

Adding to the above discussion mainly lineitems are made if the size of the dim table exceeds the 20% of the size of the fact table then lineitem dimention is created on the charecterstic which is holding huze amount of data. Also the frequency of that char in report is also taken care while creating lineitem.

    hope this helps

    Regards

Other Document Numbers can also be made as Line Item Dimensions. The purpose of Line Item Dimensions is to eliminate the Dim ID & directly use SID's in the fact table to make search faster when queried.

Choosing a line item dimension wholly depends on its usage in query ,size of the dimension as well as the characteristic with which its grouped.

Document date cannot be made as a Line Item Dimension(Only meant for Characteristics)

    Hi

Document Number - This is made line item dimension because this document number is unique....you cannot have more than 1 sales document with same number and this can be related to all the fields present in the sales document

Similar, Accounting document number and Clearing Document Number

Document Date : In case your are not taking any document number to the cube, data will be aggregated to the next level of detail ...might be at Customer level or some other level...in that case also Document Date will be there showing the aggregated value

Say, you can have list of accounting documents with customer overdues

If you dont take accounting document number to to cube, customer dues will be aggregated for every customer on every date...all the dues on a particular date get aggregated to a values and I dont feel a reason to make this as line item dimension.......
