Can we Move Oracle DB Instance including Softwar from one Server to Another

Hi, I am interested to know if we can move the database software also along with the datafile movement to the new server. Has anyone worked on this.

    Yes you can, that is called "System copy"

    Homogeneous system copy if the servers are from the same OS.

    Heterogeneous system copy if the servers are from different OS.

    The correct and supported procedure is explained on the guides that you can find on the SAP Service Marketplace:

    Filesystem copy is not the correct way of performing it. If you do so, there will be some "things" missing, like the correct tcp/ip port assignation ...

    Hi Anantha

    Well, we had Solaris OS and on taking a file system backup and restoring the same on different server, the Oracle DB alongwith data files and SAP Application got automatically installed on the new server.

    However, in case of Windows, i doubt the same as there are registry entries of the application. The best way wud be to install the DB on the new server and then restore the data.
