ELM Changing customer fields

Hi,

I am trying to use external list management to update business partner data as e.g. marketing attributes. Can anybody tell me the prerequistes?

I have created a mapping format and thereafter ran the transaction for maintaining external list. However no posts are updated.

Suggestions??
