SAP BI can run consolidated analyses based on master data which has been consolidated by MDM. As of MDM 5.5 SP02, there are two variants in place with respect to enabling BI analyses based on consolidated master data:
1. Consolidation of master data from client systems:
Allows you to identify identical master data objects within heterogeneous landscapes, merge identical objects centrally, and provide the relevant key mapping information for further use in business operations or BI analytics.
2. Consolidation of BI master data: Allows you to update BI master data info objects to provide a solid base for cross-company reporting, such as global spend analyses.
For a complete overview, see the Scenario Description for Master-Data Consolidation at

For more details, see the MDM 5.5 SP02 - Scenario Process Guide at http://service.sap.com/instguidesnw04 ->Operations -> SAP MDM.

Hi Akhil,
In lines with what Nitin has mentioned SAP BI is basically an OLAP system which performs analytics on Data which includes both master as well as transactional data to create reports based on the analysis.
If your master data is not accurate or correct or complete for that matter the analysis performed will be incorrect which will directly impact your business process.
So in this context SAP BI and SAP MDM are closely connected to each other besides data transfer between BI and MDM is also quite easy as both systems can talk to each other even without XI.

Hi Ankit,
SAP MDM is basically for consolidation, harmonization of MASTER DATA.
SAP BI is meant for taking both the Master and the Transaction data and it is basically meant for Reporting purposes. In BI , we cant make changes to the data coming in.
Whereas in MDM, we enrich and clean the data as per the requirement. We also find potential duplicates in MDM.
Thanks and Regards
