Emails without distribution list

Hi

Please let me know if mails can be triggered without using a distribution list. I have configured M0001 feature but distribution list is mandatory for this.

I am working on recruitment module. The requirement is when the action of initial data entry of applicant is run then a mail should get triggered to the applicant, acknowledging the receipt of his resume.
