Sales order stock rejection

I want to understand how the sales order stock which has been reserved for a particular SO item behaves when it is rejected(set the reason for rejection at item)? The stock that was reserved gets released to the unrestricted stock or not? Please tell me what are the changes that occur in the system -to the sales order and the stock in this scenario.
