I would like to generate a SQL Query to pull data from a reporting cube in BW using Selection criteria.I am not clear if we need to pull data into Temp files in SQL server or directly connect to SAP BW.

That depends on your implementation! If you need to simply run a SQL Query, you probably will run this against the HANA database. If you want to pull data to SQL Server, check with your consulting team what they are implementing.

It is a very broad question without a scope.
