HI !!! On Migration

HI,

We are planning to Migrate our servers on to a single box. where we are planning to migrate ECC, BI and XI servers on to a Single Box1. and

ECC, SCM, BI and EP 7.0 on to another box2.

1) I would like to know weather it is a good idea to migrate all different components into a single box?

2) Is it a good idea to have only ECC components in one box and BI servers on another box?

3) After migration will it be any problem in accessing the URL for the different components which are in the same box. since BI and XI and EP are in same BOX.

and i would like to know the recomendations for this migration.

Sugessions and Documents will be Appreciated.

Regards,

Mag.

    Hello!

There is no straightforward answer to your questions without the details. Generally speaking it's definitely possible to consolidate these systems in one box. If it's advisable depends on your requirements. Let's assume the box has enough power to run all the systems in parallel then it's not a problem during runtime. Things like patching the OS or updateing a Java Version will be much more complex than in a box with only one system though.

About the URLs: You need to take good care of your ports and virtual servernames, then it will not be a problem. Such a consolidated setup takes some design and planning effort so it's no good to just log onto the box and run sapinst in the hope that it will know what you want. It won't and in fact it might suggest things you DON'T want.

So step 1 definitely needs to be sitting down and compiling a detailed list of your requirements in terms of URLs (Things like: "Do you need more than one system to answer on the default ports" need to be clear before you can finalize the design).

    Regards,

    Jörg

    Hi Mag,

    My suggestion:

    1) I would like to know weather it is a good idea to migrate all different components into a single box?

Off course your landscape will become more simple when you consolidate all those component to a single box but i would not recommend this due to performance issue and availability. Just imagine you put 5 eggs in a basket. Once you drop the basket, you'll break all the eggs.

    2) Is it a good idea to have only ECC components in one box and BI servers on another box?

Yes it's a good idea.A lot of things that you can exploit from there.

    3) After migration will it be any problem in accessing the URL for the different components which are in the same box. since BI and XI and EP are in same BOX.

No problem because you can differentiate the system by instance number and by default SAP will create different port base on the instance number.

    Thanks and Regards

    Thanks For your Reply.

Are there any sugessions which need to be followed while performing Mass Migration. We are planning to go ahead.

    1) While Migrating an R/3 we can install CI and follow Attach and Detach or Backup and Restore method. But how to migrate a portal on to a different box?

    2) Is there any other method to be followed for Portal Migration?

    3) Kindly Suggest me the steps or Document which specifies about Migration of Portal.

    Kindly Suggest.

    Regards,

    Mag.

    Hi,

basically the method choice is the system copy - depending on the details it may be possible with detach/attach or backup/restore instead of the Load-method. System copy guides are available on the Service-Marketplace.
