Vertical decomposition/Column based storage

I have read that BIA stores data as columns and not rows of record. I cannot visualise this since I cannot see how a line of a column would be related to a line of another column so that a query request line is built. How is this done or have I missed something? Thanks

I think it is just a matter how internal table with the results is built. As I understand the idea it is to scroll only thru one column to find corresponding values, rather then scrolling thru the table (whole row) and selecting value from one column.
