Crystal 9 Professional compatibility with newer version

I am looking to buy a newer version of Crystal for report writing that is compatible with Windows 10. I was told I need to buy Crystal 2016 (is that true?). What I need to know is if anything written in this version would be compatible to be refreshed and viewed in Crystal 9 Professional and (vice versa) can reports written in 9 be refreshed and viewed in 2016?

I have one user right now on Windows 10 that I need to upgrade as 9 won't run on his machine and I don't want to upgrade everyone right now. They need to be able to trade reports back and forth.

Thank you for any information you can give me.

Hi Annette,

CR 2016 will work fine and better to use the latest. Just tell him not to alter the reports with features CR 9 does not have, there are a lot of features in CR 2011 and above that will not work in CR 9.

So going from CR 9 to 2016 will work, going from CR 2016 to CR 9 will work but will not take advantage of any new features 2016 may have been used.

Another issue is CR 9 has older legacy DB drivers. So it depends on your data source as to what they may see.

Another major update is Printer drivers.

I suggest moving all to 2016 sooner than later so they can all be fixed at once, if required.

Just back up the reports so you can restore them if needed.

Hi Don,

Thanks for your information. I will move forward. I have 55 users using Crystal so it is going to be pretty expensive to update everyone at once but will put together some sort of upgrade program going forward.

Hi Abhilash,

Thanks so much for your answer. Do you know if I have to go to Crystal 2016 or is there another version that will work for Windows 10?

I suggest going to CR 2016, it is the latest release and will definitely work on Windows 10.

I believe CR 2013 SP 6 was the first version to support Windows 10 but it's better to use 2016 SP 4 ( latest ) to be fully supported on the latest Windows 10 updates.

Hi Annette,

Reports created in ver. 9 should work just fine in the newer versions.

I can't say for sure whether reports created in newer versions would work in v9 as there have been a lot of new features that you won't find in the old versions.
