XI vs Traditional approach in connecting 2 R/3 systems in same landscape

Hi,

What would be the best approach to connect two R/3 systems within the same landscape to exchange IDOCs/RFCS.

All these days, we never needed a middleware to connect two R/3 systems and I had witnessed no problem in doing so.

With SAP XI in place, is it expected to route all these idocs via XI. What is the advantage we get ? Other than documenting the integration scenario... I am not able to find any reason why this should be so. Wouldnt using XI be a more performance burden approach?

Or we shouldn't use XI in such cases?

Thanks!!!

Well, a middleware is an overhead if you are trying to connect two systems. As the number of systems increase you will see middleware make sense.

if there is some complex mapping involved then XI is a good option to integrate, secondly via XI you can monitor all your interfaces centrally, you don't need to monitor lots of point to point interfaces.

definitely the performance(in terms of speed and effeciency) will be reduced a bit but thats a trade off you do for other benefits.

if you have XI already in place then you should give a thought to use XI to integrate any two systems(SAP or non-SAP,does not matter)

Thanx
