Difference between ALE/IDOCs & SAP XI

how SAP XI is better than ALE/IDOCs. I Request you to please explain this.

ALE/IDocs - Application linking and enabling

This is a method is used to establish a link between application which can communicate only using standard format like IDoc.

SAP Xi - Exchange Infrastructure

This is Integration technology which is using integrate various hetrogenous applciations. We can use XI to integrate any kind of system (mostly) no matter of the communication standard

the main difference is

ALE/IDoc -- only used for IDoc as communication standard

SAP XI -- can be used for various communication standard

In the simplest form

ALE jus enable trans of business data from 1 sap system to other.

Now the practical scneario where most of the organization have many different application other than sap also running how do u facilitate data trasfer between them.

XI Supports process centeric based collaboration among sap and non sap system both with in beyond orgaziational boundaries.

this wud help u in understanding

ALE is interchange between trusted partners whereas XI can be between any external partners as well,
