Clarification needed regarding Integrated Commication Interface (ICI)

We have recently upgraded to CRM 5.0 (ABAP only instance) and are looking to integrate a CTI solution while using IC Webclient. In order to utilized this solution we need - ICI/BCB/SAM components operational. Searching the online documentation I am getting somewhat dizzy - some notes state I require a J2EE/Java instance while others state these functions are integrated within the SAP ABAP Basis.

I understand in order to utilize the simulator a java instance is necessary but if we do not require the simulator - Does the ABAP instance have what we need and all we have to do is configure it?

Thanks to all!
